On May 15 2017, Shara Ashley Zeiger launched a Kickstarter for her film The Red Lotus. After a critically acclaimed run of her play about the homeless Roughly Speaking (Also a Kickstarter project) Shara was inspired to make art that matters once again. This time, fueled by the climate after the election, she wrote a film about Women’s Rights in a dystopian future. Partnering her company The Platform Group with Paula Rossman’s Wall is the Way: Works they brought on a female director (Jessica Alexandra Green), a mostly female producing team, and a fantastic crew to make it happen.
The Red Lotus is a narrative film with a bone chilling story. Two sisters go away for a weekend to strengthen their relationship and uncover a secret that will bind them for life. Set in a not too distant dystopian future, The Red Lotus is a tale of strength, women's rights, sisterhood, and the human spirit. Michelle drags her sister Debbie to a yoga retreat only to reveal that there is no retreat, but an underground abortion clinic. Michelle needs Debbie’s support, and they are no longer legal. In her traditional storytelling style, Shara interviewed many women who have had abortions for the source material that inspired the film.
The cast includes Shara Ashley Zeiger, Paula Rossman, Jennifer Plotzke, Jen Lyon, Jared P Smith, Dani Baum, and Walker Hare. The creative team and crew includes Shara Ashley Zeiger, Jessica Alexandra Green, Mike Magilnick, Leeran Z. Raphaely, Scott Aviles, Jack Bradley, David Sikora, Adrian Bosi, William Battle, and Jonathan Wetjen.
The team self-funded the intial shoot of the film. They shot on location at The Dragon’s Egg in Mystic CT, and at the prestigious O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford CT in January 2017 and currently have an 18min rough cut of the film. Shara hopes to raise funds to get it to festivals ($6,000) with a stretch goal to turn the short into a feature. They have a lot of fun rewards for their campaign including Women’s Rights temporary tattoos with quotes from their film, lotus charms, copies of the film, an invite to a yoga party in NYC, and producer credits.
“We have a lot more story to tell and need help to tell it. The time for this film is now, and I am very activated as a creator in this climate. Women’s Rights are being challenged right and left and this entertaining but cautionary tale is exactly what the world needs.” ~Zeiger
